Work out your Course Handicap

Enter your index and the tees you're playing.

The formula

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. A Slope of 113 is a course of standard difficulty; most courses are between about 110 and 140.

Where to find Slope and Course Rating

They are printed on the scorecard for each set of tees, and usually on a sign near the first tee. In the US you can look them up in the USGA course rating database.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Handicap Index and Course Handicap?

Your Handicap Index measures your ability and is the same everywhere. Your Course Handicap is how many strokes you get on a particular set of tees. It is higher on harder courses and lower on easier ones.

How do I calculate my Course Handicap?

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par), rounded to the nearest whole number. Example: 18.4 × (128 ÷ 113) + (71.2 − 72) = 20.0, so 20 strokes.

Why is my Course Handicap higher than my index?

Because the Slope of those tees is above 113, the slope of a course of standard difficulty. The harder the course is for a bogey golfer, the more strokes you get.

What is a Playing Handicap?

In some competitions a percentage of your Course Handicap is used, called the handicap allowance, for example 95% in individual stroke play. For a casual round with friends, your Course Handicap is what you use.
